Sorcery
Destroy target creature or enchantment an opponent controls. You lose life equal to that permanent's mana value.
"On vile wings and bloody wind, the swarm will rise." —Skyclave inscription
Feed the Swarm is a versatile black removal spell that offers flexible answers to both creature and enchantment threats at an efficient mana cost. This single-black-mana sorcery destroys target creature or enchantment an opponent controls, making it exceptionally valuable in formats where enchantment-based threats have become increasingly prevalent. The life payment mechanic tied to the permanent's mana value creates an interesting tension that rewards strategic timing and threat assessment. While the life loss can be a drawback, the flexibility and low casting cost make this card exceptionally strong in the current metagame, particularly against decks built around Aura-based strategies, Saga threats, or token generators. Players would want Feed the Swarm in aggressive black decks, sacrifice-themed strategies that benefit from life total fluctuations, and control shells that need efficient removal options. The card fits naturally into pioneer, modern, and legacy midrange and control decks where targeted removal is crucial, and it has proven itself in standard environments where enchantment density remains high. Its pauper legality also makes it an excellent addition to budget-friendly cubes and limited environments. The sorcery speed is the primary limitation, but combined with its two-in-one functionality and low cost, Feed the Swarm remains one of black's most efficient and pragmatic removal options across nearly every format where it's legal, particularly shining in matchups where traditional creature removal would leave you vulnerable to enchantment-based strategies.
