Strategy & Gameplay

Augur of Autumn is a powerhouse mana accelerator and card advantage engine that has earned significant play across multiple competitive formats and casual Commander tables alike. This three-mana creature provides exceptional utility through its layered abilities that reward you for building around the Coven mechanic. The first two abilities are immediately valuable, allowing you to see the top card of your library at any time and play lands directly from the top, essentially turning your library into an extension of your hand while providing consistent mana acceleration. However, the true power emerges once you assemble three creatures with different power values, which activates the Coven condition and grants the ability to cast creature spells directly from the top of your library. This transforms Augur of Autumn into a card advantage juggernaut that demands an answer from your opponent, as you're essentially drawing creatures every turn while simultaneously advancing your board presence. In Pioneer and Modern, this card has found homes in various green-based decks, particularly those featuring token generation, sacrifice outlets, or other creatures with naturally different power levels. The Coven requirement is surprisingly easy to meet in Commander where creature diversity is the norm, making Augur of Autumn exceptional in the format. Players value this card for its flexibility, the impossibility of cards stuck in hand due to mana restrictions, and the tremendous pressure it applies when the Coven condition is met, making it a staple include in green decks that can support its relatively light mana requirements while assembling the necessary board state.
