Strategy & Gameplay

Planetary Annihilation is a powerful red sorcery from the EOC set that offers aggressive players a unique asymmetrical board wipe with potential resource acceleration built into its effect. At five mana—three generic and two red—this card serves as a compelling middle ground between pure tempo plays and sweeping effects, making it particularly attractive in constructed formats where land destruction strategies can shine. The card's dual function of forcing each player to sacrifice all but six lands while simultaneously dealing six damage to each creature creates interesting strategic depth; skilled pilots can leverage this to their advantage by building decks with lower land counts or by timing the spell to maximize the damage component against creature-heavy opposing strategies. In Commander and Oathbreaker formats, Planetary Annihilation finds natural homes in aggressive red strategies, land-destruction focused decks, and commanders that benefit from repeated effects or have evasion from the damage clause. The card particularly appeals to players running Gruul or pure red aggressive strategies that can recover quickly from land sacrifice effects while punishing opponents who've overextended their mana bases. Legacy and Vintage players have found niche applications in red-based prison decks and land destruction strategies where controlling the opponent's resources proves essential. The flexibility of dealing damage while taxing resources makes this sorcery a versatile inclusion for competitive and casual players alike who want a unique approach to board control that rewards careful deckbuilding and strategic sequencing.
