Piercing Exhale

Tarkir: Dragonstorm common

Instant

As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may behold a Dragon. (You may choose a Dragon you control or reveal a Dragon card from your hand.) Target creature you control deals damage equal to its power to target creature or planeswalker. If a Dragon was beheld, surveil 2.

Strategy & Gameplay

Piercing Exhale is an exceptionally flexible instant from The Dragon's Mending that serves as both a removal spell and tempo tool for aggressive green-based strategies. This two-mana spell targets a creature or planeswalker with damage equal to the power of one of your creatures, making it a scaling removal option that rewards you for playing larger threats. The card's real versatility emerges through its behold mechanic, which allows you to either tap an in-play Dragon or reveal a Dragon from your hand as an additional cost. This design flexibility is particularly valuable because it enables the spell to function as pseudo-removal even when you're light on board presence, since you can simply reveal a Dragon from your hand to unlock the surveil 2 advantage. The surveil component is crucial in limited and constructed formats alike, as it provides card selection and fills your graveyard for strategies that benefit from discard or recursion. For deck construction, Piercing Exhale slots naturally into any Dragon-focused strategy, from aggressive Dragon Stompy shells in Pioneer and Modern to more controlling Dragon midrange decks in Commander. Even in non-Dragon decks, the base effect of instant-speed damage tied to creature power makes this a solid removal piece in green-focused formats where you're already running mid-sized creatures. The card's legality across virtually every format, including Commander, makes it an excellent addition for players looking for efficient removal with upside, particularly those invested in Dragon tribal strategies or tempo-based green decks that can leverage both the damage and the surveil advantage.
