Enchantment
Whenever an opponent casts a spell, that player loses 5 life unless they discard a card.
In Mishra's desperation to destroy his brother, he allowed Gix to destroy him instead.
Painful Quandary is a potent enchantment that excels in disruption-heavy black control strategies and dedicated discard-focused decks across multiple formats. This three-mana investment creates a powerful asymmetrical effect that forces opponents into an uncomfortable choice each turn: either lose five life or discard a card, both of which represent meaningful resources. In game states where you're already applying pressure or have established board presence, this enchantment becomes an engine of attrition that quickly overwhelms opponents unprepared to deal with it. The card performs exceptionally well in Pioneer and Modern black control shells that already run heavy discard packages, as the threat of discarding becomes increasingly devastating when combined with cards like Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, or Liliana of the Veil. In Commander, particularly in Grixis or mono-black control builds, Painful Quandary serves as a repeatable stax effect that punishes spell-slinging opponents while accumulating chip damage over the course of the game. The enchantment is also valuable in Brawl and Standard-legal constructed formats where it can anchor a control strategy. Players gravitate toward this card because it offers both offense and defense simultaneously: you're dealing unavoidable damage while simultaneously degrading opponents' hands, creating a dual axis of pressure that's difficult to ignore. Against combo decks or tempo strategies that rely on playing multiple spells, Painful Quandary becomes a nightmare, forcing difficult decisions that disrupt their game plan while you maintain tempo and card advantage.
