Enchantment — Aura
Enchant opponent When this Aura enters, enchanted opponent creates a Clue token, a Food token, and a Junk token. At the beginning of combat on enchanted opponent's turn, that player may pay {1} for each artifact they control. If they don't, creatures can't attack this combat.
Overencumbered is a unique white enchantment aura that offers a creative approach to creature control through artifact management and resource taxation. This three-mana spell enchants an opponent and immediately generates value by forcing them to create a Clue token, a Food token, and a Junk token upon entering the battlefield. The real strategic depth emerges from its combat-suppressing ability, which presents opponents with a difficult choice each turn during their combat phase: they must pay one mana for each artifact they control to allow their creatures to attack, or they're locked out of combat entirely. This creates a fascinating resource tension, especially in artifact-heavy decks that may have invested significant mana into building a board presence. This card fits well into white control and stax-style strategies, where limiting opponent options is paramount. It's particularly effective against artifact-based strategies, tokens decks, and commanders that rely on go-wide creature strategies. The Clue and Food tokens generated can be sacrificed for utility, making this a pseudo-ramp effect while simultaneously weakening the opponent's combat capability. Overencumbered sees play across multiple formats including Legacy, Vintage, Commander, and Oathbreaker, making it a versatile inclusion for players building control-focused decks. Players should consider this card when they want an efficient answer to aggressive strategies that doesn't require combat interaction, offering both tempo disruption and incremental advantage through token generation.
