Legendary Artifact Creature — Synth Detective
Nick Valentine can't be blocked except by artifact creatures. Whenever Nick Valentine or another artifact creature you control dies, you may investigate. (To investigate, create a Clue token. It's an artifact with "{2}, Sacrifice this token: Draw a card.")
"Your case is my top concern."
Nick Valentine, Private Eye is a compelling three-mana blue legendary artifact creature that serves as both an evasive threat and a card advantage engine rolled into one efficient package. With only two blue and one generic mana required, this detective synth offers excellent tempo value while fitting naturally into artifact-focused strategies across multiple formats. The evasion ability preventing block except by artifact creatures makes Nick a reliable clock that pressures opponents while demanding specific answers, particularly powerful in environments with limited artifact creature blockers. Beyond the damage potential, Nick's real strength lies in the investigate trigger, which generates card advantage whenever he or any of your artifact creatures hit the graveyard. This creates a compelling incentive to build around artifact synergies, turning your creatures into repeatable card draw engines. The Clue tokens themselves are artifacts, enabling further synergies with artifact-matter strategies and providing mana sinks when you're flooded on lands. Nick Valentine excels in Commander formats where artifact-heavy decks can maximize the investigate triggers through sacrificial strategies and creature recursion. He's particularly strong in Simic and Azorious artifact shells that benefit from both the creature evasion and card advantage generation. In Legacy and Vintage, Nick fits into tempo-oriented artifact decks that leverage his unblockable body while generating incremental value. His legendary status makes him a reasonable commander choice for artifact-focused strategies while still serving as a strong supporting creature in the 99. The relatively low mana cost means he comes down early enough to establish a threatening board presence before developing your artifact synergies, making him an excellent early-game play that scales into late-game card advantage.
