Marionette Apprentice is a versatile two-mana creature that represents excellent value in any Black-based strategy looking to leverage sacrifice synergies and artifact synergy. This Human Artificer comes in as a 1/2 body that doesn't seem imposing at first glance, but its mechanical suite quickly reveals its true potential in the right deck construction. The fabricate ability provides immediate flexibility upon entering the battlefield—you can either pump the creature itself with a +1/+1 counter to make it a more respectable blocker or attacker, or generate a 1/1 Servo token that provides another body for the battlefield. This choice is particularly valuable in the early game when you're still developing your board presence. Where Marionette Apprentice truly shines, however, is through its triggered ability that punishes your opponents every time another creature or artifact enters your graveyard from the battlefield. This synergizes beautifully with sacrifice outlets, death-trigger strategies, and decks that naturally churn through their own permanents. In formats like Commander, Modern, and Legacy, this card finds a home in aristocrat decks, Yawgmoth shells, and any strategy built around recurring sacrifice outlets like Viscera Seer or Altar of Dementia. The card scales exceptionally well in multiplayer formats where each opponent loses life independently, making it a genuine threat in Commander pods. For competitive players, Marionette Apprentice offers a reasonably costed engine piece that requires minimal support while generating incremental damage and card advantage, making it an ideal include for anyone building around death triggers or artifact-focused strategies.
