Creature — Zombie
Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.) Lieutenant — At the beginning of combat on your turn, if you control your commander, each opponent loses 3 life.
Zombies work best when they're fed appropriately, so it's prudent to let them eat on the job.
Loyal Subordinate is a potent three-mana creature that brings both offensive pressure and life drain synergy to black-based decks, particularly those built around commander strategies. As a 3/1 creature with menace, it demands immediate attention from opponents since it cannot be blocked by a single creature, forcing them to commit multiple blockers or take damage. The real value, however, comes from its lieutenant ability, which triggers at the beginning of combat on your turn whenever you control your commander, dealing three damage to each opponent with every combat phase. In a typical four-player commander game, this translates to nine damage per turn cycle, making it an exceptional source of passive damage that accumulates quickly without requiring additional resources after casting. This card fits seamlessly into any black commander deck, but shines particularly in strategies built around aggressive Orzhov or Grixis commanders, as well as any black-focused aristocrat or sacrifice-themed decks that want multiple combat phases or can protect their commander reliably. The lieutenant mechanic encourages building around your commander as a persistent threat, rewarding players who can keep their general untapped and active. Loyal Subordinate's relatively low mana cost of two black and one generic mana makes it an efficient early play that immediately impacts the game state. Players should strongly consider this card for legacy, vintage, and especially commander formats where the lieutenant ability can reliably trigger multiple times per game, creating exponential value and threatening life totals in ways that justify deck inclusion.
