Enchantment — Aura
Enchant modified creature (Equipment, Auras its controller controls, and counters are modifications.) Enchanted creature gets +3/+3 and has vigilance and reach. Umbra armor (If enchanted creature would be destroyed, instead remove all damage from it and destroy this Aura.)
Lion Umbra is a powerful green Aura from Modern Horizons 3 that brings significant utility to modified creature strategies in Magic the Gathering. This enchantment costs just two green mana and requires its target to already be a modified creature, meaning it has Equipment, other Auras, or counters attached or on it. Once enchanted, the creature receives a substantial boost of plus three/plus three in power and toughness, gaining both vigilance and reach abilities, making it an excellent offensive and defensive tool. The real value proposition comes from its Umbra armor ability, which provides crucial protection by preventing your creature from being destroyed, instead removing all damage and destroying the Aura itself as an alternative cost. This protection is particularly relevant in a format where removal is abundant, allowing you to protect your key creatures while still maintaining tempo. Lion Umbra fits perfectly into modified-focused deck archetypes like Boros or Gruul Aura decks, Hardened Scales strategies, and any tempo deck that already runs Equipment or other modifications. The card is legal across an impressive range of formats including Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Commander, and Historic, giving players multiple avenues to employ it. Players should consider Lion Umbra when building around creatures that already have built-in modifications or when layering multiple modification synergies for exponential value, as the protection it offers combined with the stat boost creates a formidable threat that opponents must answer immediately.
