Lightning Bolt is the gold standard of burn spells and one of the most iconic cards in Magic's history. Three damage to any target for a single red mana represents the most efficient rate of damage-per-mana ever printed, and its versatility as both creature removal and a direct damage finisher makes it indispensable in every format where it's legal. In Modern, Bolt defines the format — the phrase "dies to Bolt" is a fundamental deckbuilding heuristic, and aggressive decks like Burn, Prowess, and Red Deck Wins are built around maximizing its efficiency. In Legacy, it competes with Swords to Plowshares but remains the premium red removal spell, handling Delver of Secrets and Dark Confidant while threatening lethal reach. In Commander, Lightning Bolt is less impactful due to higher life totals but still earns inclusion in spell-slinger builds and decks helmed by commanders like Tor Wauki the Younger or Firesong and Sunspeaker.
