Strategy & Gameplay

Keruga, the Macrosage is a powerful companion option that rewards players for building decks around higher-impact spells and permanents, making it an excellent inclusion for midrange and ramp-focused strategies across multiple formats. As a five-mana 5/4 creature with the companion mechanic, Keruga demands deck building around its constraint of only including cards with mana value 3 or greater alongside land cards, but the payoff is substantial. The card's enter-the-battlefield ability triggers a card draw for each permanent you control with mana value 3 or greater, meaning that in any deck featuring multiple impactful creatures, artifacts, or enchantments, Keruga essentially draws you several cards immediately upon entering the battlefield. This creates explosive turns where casting Keruga can refill your hand significantly, providing both a reasonable body and significant card advantage in one package. The companion ability also grants flexibility, allowing you to cast Keruga from outside the game for just three mana once per game, which is considerably cheaper than its standard casting cost and can provide game-turning advantage at crucial moments. Keruga fits naturally into ramp decks, landfall strategies, artifact-heavy shells, and any deck running substantial numbers of high-impact permanents, particularly in formats like Pioneer, Modern, and Commander where such strategies flourish. Players seeking a card advantage engine that doubles as a threatening creature while maintaining format legality across Historic, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, and Vintage will find Keruga an excellent choice for competitive and casual play alike.
