Ichor Synthesizer

Phyrexia: All Will Be One common

Creature — Phyrexian Wizard

Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, put an oil counter on this creature. As long as this creature has four or more oil counters on it, it gets +2/+0 and can't be blocked.

P/T: 1/3

"I've isolated the chirality of the glistening oil, so there will be no wasted precursors."

Strategy & Gameplay

This unassuming blue creature represents a powerful engine for spell-slinging strategies across multiple formats. At just one blue mana for a 1/3 body, Ichor Synthesizer serves as an efficient foundation that rewards your primary game plan: casting noncreature spells. The card's mechanical elegance lies in its scaling progression, where each spell you cast beyond creatures adds an oil counter, meaning the synthesizer grows more threatening as you execute your intended strategy rather than requiring awkward deck construction compromises. Once it accumulates four oil counters, the creature transforms into an evasive threat with +2/0 power and cannot be blocked, turning a modest utility body into a legitimate clock that can close out games in just a few attacks. This card excels in control decks, spellslinger strategies, and tempo shells where you're naturally casting multiple noncreature spells per turn cycle. In Pioneer and Modern formats, it slots perfectly into izzet or azorius tempo decks that lean heavily on instants, sorceries, and planeswalkers. Historic and Timeless formats offer even more spell density, making this card particularly menacing. Even in Commander, especially in spell-focused commanders or as a supporting element in draws-matter strategies, Ichor Synthesizer provides an efficient pressure point that's difficult for opponents to ignore early while threatening to turn lethal rapidly. The unblockable clause is particularly relevant, as it guarantees damage once the activation threshold is met, making it invaluable in formats where creature-based defense is prevalent.
