Strategy & Gameplay

Geth, Thane of Contracts is a powerful graveyard-focused commander and format staple that opens up compelling deckbuilding strategies across multiple constructed formats. As a three-mana legendary creature with a respectable 3/4 body, this Phyrexian Zombie offers incredible value through its activated ability, allowing you to return creature cards from your graveyard to the battlefield at the cost of three mana and a tap, with the added benefit of permanently exiling those creatures if they would leave play. This built-in protection against removal makes your recurring threats significantly harder to deal with and creates a recursive engine that generates tremendous value over the course of a game. The drawback of giving your other creatures -1/-1 is easily managed in dedicated strategies, particularly in sacrifice-focused and aristocrats decks where you're already planning to send creatures to the graveyard intentionally. This card excels in commander formats where the singleton nature and repeatable activation potential shine brightest, especially when paired with creatures that provide value when entering or leaving the battlefield, tutors that fill your graveyard, and sacrifice outlets that maximize your utility. In Pioneer, Modern, and Legacy, Geth slots beautifully into grindy midrange and control shells that operate as a game-closing threat after establishing board control. The card's flexibility across so many legal formats, from casual Brawl to competitive Vintage, combined with its powerful synergies with self-mill strategies, makes it an excellent acquisition for players looking to explore graveyard-based strategies or build around recursive threats.
