Creature — Zombie
Start your engines! (If you have no speed, it starts at 1. It increases once on each of your turns when an opponent loses life. Max speed is 4.) When this creature enters, create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token. Max speed — Whenever a creature you control dies, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.
Embalmed Ascendant is a versatile creature that brings both immediate value and scaling potential to any deck built around life gain and creature sacrifice strategies. At just one white and one black mana with an additional generic cost, this three-mana 1/2 creature enters the battlefield immediately generating a 2/2 Zombie token, providing solid board presence right away. The real power emerges from its unique "Start your engines" mechanic, which creates a speed counter system that rewards you for dealing damage to opponents through life loss triggers. Once you've accumulated enough speed counters to reach maximum speed through consistent life loss effects, Embalmed Ascendant transforms into a recursive damage engine whenever any of your creatures die, creating a devastating loop in the late game where each creature sacrifice becomes both removal and incremental damage while simultaneously gaining you life. This card fits perfectly into multiple archetypes across different formats. In Standard and Pioneer, it slots seamlessly into Orzhov (white-black) lifegain decks that can leverage cards generating life drain triggers and creature tokens. In Commander and Oathbreaker, it becomes particularly powerful in sacrifice-focused decks with commanders like Davriel or other life drain strategies, where the speed counter acceleration becomes almost inevitable given the format's longer games. Modern and Legacy players will find it valuable in established Orzhov tokens or aristocrats strategies. The creature's cross-format legality in nearly every competitive format makes it an excellent investment for players building multiple decks, and its reasonable mana cost means it won't clog your hand while generating consistent value throughout the game.
