Counterspell is the definitive permission spell in Magic and the benchmark against which all counterspells are measured. For two blue mana at instant speed, it unconditionally counters any spell — no restrictions, no conditions, no questions asked. Its return to Modern legality through Modern Horizons 2 reshaped blue control strategies, giving decks like Azorius Control and Jeskai a reliable hard counter that doesn't require jumping through hoops like Mana Leak or Spell Pierce. In Legacy, Counterspell competes with Force of Will and Daze but remains a staple in slower blue decks that can afford to hold up two mana. In Commander, it's an auto-include in any blue deck — the ability to answer any threat at any point in the game for just two mana is unmatched value in a format where single threats can dominate entire tables.
