Case of the Shattered Pact

Murders at Karlov Manor uncommon

Enchantment — Case

When this Case enters, search your library for a basic land card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle. To solve — There are five colors among permanents you control. (If unsolved, solve at the beginning of your end step.) Solved — At the beginning of combat on your turn, target creature you control gains flying, double strike, and vigilance until end of turn.

Strategy & Gameplay

Case of the Shattered Pact from the Modern Horizons 3 set is a versatile enchantment that bridges mana consistency with combat utility, making it an excellent inclusion in multicolor strategies and decks that can reliably solve its condition. The initial tutor effect is immediately valuable, allowing you to search your library for a basic land upon entry, providing both mana fixing and deck thinning without requiring additional mana investment beyond the two-mana casting cost. This front-end advantage makes the card worthwhile even if you never solve the Case, but the real power emerges when you can assemble permanents across all five colors, which transforms this into a powerful combat pump engine. Once solved, the ability grants your chosen creature flying, double strike, and vigilance each combat phase, creating explosive turn wins and establishing a significant board advantage that's difficult for opponents to race. Double strike is a particularly synergistic keyword here, as it doubles the value of any enter-the-battlefield triggers, damage triggers, or creature abilities that fire during combat. This card fits naturally into five-color control shells, domain strategies that already incentivize playing multiple colors, and commander decks built around cards like Omnath or Morophon. The solved condition solving at your end step means you need only assemble the five colors to flip it automatically, making it suitable for ramp-based approaches. Case of the Shattered Pact sees playability across Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Commander, and all other non-rotating formats, particularly shining in formats where mana bases can support the color requirement without significant deckbuilding constraints. This card offers both immediate value and rewarding long-term payoff for players invested in multicolor strategies.
