Breeches, the Blastmaker

Outlaws of Thunder Junction rare

Legendary Creature — Goblin Pirate

Menace Whenever you cast your second spell each turn, you may sacrifice an artifact. If you do, flip a coin. When you win the flip, copy that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy. When you lose the flip, Breeches deals damage equal to that spell's mana value to any target.

Strategy & Gameplay

Breeches, the Blastmaker is a compelling three-mana legendary creature that brings explosive potential to spell-slinging strategies across multiple formats. This Goblin Pirate combines evasive pressure with a unique triggered ability that rewards players for casting multiple spells per turn, making it an excellent fit for tempo and spell-focused decks that want to maximize their interaction suite. The menace keyword ensures that Breeches demands removal or favorable blocks from opponents, providing meaningful pressure even if its ability doesn't trigger immediately. The core mechanic is where this card shines: whenever you cast your second spell each turn, you may sacrifice an artifact to create a high-variance but potentially game-changing effect. By flipping a coin, you either copy that second spell with the ability to choose new targets, effectively doubling your spell output and creating exponential value, or you pivot to direct damage equal to the spell's mana value, maintaining tempo pressure even if the coin flip goes against you. This flexibility is crucial in formats like Pioneer, Modern, and Commander where adaptability matters. In Standard and Pioneer, Breeches slots naturally into Izzet spellslinger decks, particularly those leveraging artifact synergies or cheap cantrips and removal spells. Commander players will appreciate the card in Kykar, Wind's Fury, Brudiclad, Telchin Engineer, or other spell-heavy strategies where consistent ability triggers fuel long-term value. The relatively low mana cost means you can deploy Breeches early and begin generating value immediately, while the artifact sacrifice cost provides deckbuilding flexibility, rewarding players who include mana rocks, tokens, or other expendable artifacts in their lists. Even in formats where the ability doesn't resolve, a menace creature for three mana is solid rate.
