Strategy & Gameplay

Boom Scholar is a versatile midrange creature that serves as both a powerful effect amplifier and a standalone threat across multiple formats. This three-mana Goblin Advisor comes down efficiently and immediately begins reducing the activation costs of your other permanent abilities by two generic mana, making it an excellent inclusion in any deck built around activated abilities. The cost reduction effect makes cards like Wrenn and Eight, planeswalkers with loyalty abilities, and artifact creatures with powerful exhaust or tap abilities dramatically more efficient, enabling game plans that would otherwise be mana-prohibitive. The card's own exhaust ability for four mana provides immediate value by granting trample to your team while simultaneously pumping Boom Scholar with two +1/+1 counters, creating a threat that grows larger over time while improving your combat math. This makes it particularly effective in aggressive midrange strategies that want to transition from early pressure into a resilient late game. In limited formats, Boom Scholar functions as a reasonable 3/3 body with utility, but truly shines in constructed environments where you can leverage its cost reduction across a carefully curated suite of activated abilities. The card fits naturally into Gruul strategies in Standard and Pioneer, Jund or Naya shells in Modern, and various midrange commander decks that rely on permanent-based abilities rather than simple tap abilities. Players seeking a creature that amplifies their mana efficiency while providing substantial board presence will find Boom Scholar an excellent value proposition.
