Strategy & Gameplay

Bilbo, Retired Burglar is a compelling three-mana legendary creature that exemplifies the synergistic design of the Lord of the Rings set. This blue-red hybrid offers multiple value engines that reward an aggressive game plan while generating mana acceleration through Treasure tokens. The card's primary appeal lies in its interaction with the Ring mechanic, which triggers both on entry and departure, making it an excellent anchor for strategies that abuse flickering effects or intentional sacrifice outlets. When Bilbo deals combat damage to players, you're rewarded with Treasure tokens, effectively turning evasion or unblocked damage into ramp that fuels further threats. This creates a snowball effect where early chip damage rapidly translates into explosive mid-game turns. In constructed formats, Bilbo finds homes in tempo-focused strategies within Modern and Legacy that leverage cheap interaction and creature-based evasion. The card particularly shines in Commander builds centered around Jeskai or Izzet colors, especially those featuring flicker mechanics or Ring synergies. Its combination of evasion potential through Ring tempting, mana generation, and legendary status makes it viable in 60-card Brawl strategies as well. Historic and Timeless players can capitalize on the efficient mana cost and robust interaction suite these formats offer. While the 1/3 body seems modest, Bilbo functions as an efficient threat that generates immediate value and scales well in multiplayer scenarios where multiple combat opportunities arise. The card rewards clever sequencing and punishes passive strategies, making it an excellent addition for players seeking proactive, skill-rewarding gameplay.
