Strategy & Gameplay

Archfiend of Sorrows is a powerful black creature that combines immediate board impact with exceptional versatility through its unearth mechanic. This 4/5 flyer for seven mana enters the battlefield with a powerful enters-the-battlefield effect that deals a pseudo board wipe by reducing all opposing creatures' power and toughness by 2, making it an excellent tool for breaking through stalled board states or clearing out smaller utility creatures that might otherwise block your threats. The flying keyword ensures this demon can attack through ground-based defenses while demanding an answer from your opponent. What truly makes this card shine, however, is its unearth ability, which allows you to cast it from your graveyard for just five mana, granting it haste so it can attack immediately upon entering the battlefield again. This flexibility means you're essentially getting two bodies out of one card slot, and the ability to flash-like recur it at instant speed during your main phase makes it an unpredictable threat that opponents must respect. This creature fits beautifully into several black archetypes across multiple formats. In Commander and Oathbreaker, it works wonderfully in reanimation-focused decks and self-mill strategies where accessing the graveyard is part of your game plan. In Modern and Legacy, it serves as both a finisher and a tactical removal spell for creature-heavy metagames. The card's legality across Historic, Timeless, Gladiator, Vintage, and Brawl formats means it has applications in virtually every constructed format. Players seeking a creature that punishes token strategies, mass go-wide tactics, and creature-based aggression will find tremendous value in this demon's reliable evasion and repeatable board impact.
